Rapid Response to Brahmapuram Fire, Kochi

IITM and Envitran Smart Systems Tackle Air Pollution Crisis in Kochi

A catastrophic fire broke out at the Kochi Corporation's solid waste dumpsite at Brahmapuram, Kerala on March 2, 2023.

The fire took 15 days to fully extinguish due to challenging conditions like surface and subsurface fires, high daytime
temperatures, and windy weather. The fire resulted in severe air pollution, enveloping Kochi and nearby areas, and triggered a health crisis.

The Kerala State Pollution Control Board sought help from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, and Envitran Smart Systems.
The team from Envitran Smart Systems deployed two CycloFine air purifiers at Rajagiri Engineering College and Technopark Phase II,
reducing PM concentrations. They also used advanced monitoring equipment for a comprehensive study of the pollution levels.

The real-time sensors in CycloFine were able to give critical data to the management of both institutions.

The successful implementation of these measures was supported by CSR funding from VGuard Industries and facilities provided by
the Kerala State Pollution Control Board.

The CycloFines have done an excellent job at Brahmapuram and are on their way to a new home in the National Capital Region.
